Poem for April 16, 2015

4-16 collageApril 16, 2015
Thursday evening – Home
Sunny, cooler, upper 50ºs

Red turns up again!
Didn’t jog this morning, so did before I made dinner. Trees showing signs of life. Magnolias are starting to bloom.
What do I want to do with the squares today? Maybe I’ll write the poem first and see if that generates ideas.
I like the poem, but it hasn’t helped with this page.

Selected words:
Chinese
pure
soon
continues
red
grace
months
flowers
border

4-16 poemDreaming

Thoughts today of that
cottage with the Chinese red door
and the border of pure white
flowers which grace the steps.

Months away yet,
but the dreaming continues.
Soon I tell myself.
Soon.

Poem for April 15, 2015

4-15 collageApril 15, 2015
Wednesday evening – Home
Sunny 70ºs windy

The first square I picked tonight had the word scarlet on it. Made me think of a conversation I had with a woman during the conference. I shared that I rarely choose the color red for anything – clothing, cosmetics, decorating or in art making. I prefer the cooler colors of water – blues and greens; and of the earth – browns and earthy greens. I tend to stay away from the fire element. I reflected that maybe I should start seeking out the color red. And here it has appeared!

Selected words:
possible
scarlet
finger
color
liked
interest
open
creativity
described

4-15 poemScarlet

Creativity is
described as
being open to
what is possible.
What if I liked
the color scarlet?
Can’t put my finger on why
I don’t
but maybe,
deep down,
an interest is there.

It has been hectic since I’ve gotten back from the conference. Here is the poem and journal page for today. I will get the others from the past week posted in the next few days.

Poem for April 13, 2015

4-13 CollageApril 13, 2015
Monday evening – Home
Sunny, low 60ºs

Mom made us breakfast – french toast with blueberries. I headed out early – had lots to do before lecture today. Went for a jog before dinner. Lots of people out. Wrote yesterday’s poem, now working on this.

Selected words:
beautiful
gained
brought
richness
some
thirty
sculpture
visible
water-lily

4-13 PoemCentral Park

So many beautiful scenes,
such richness visible always:
Water-lily ponds,
sculpture,
thirty or more staircases,
some leading to magnificent vistas.
This one treasure
had brought endless pleasure
to city dwellers
for generations
and truly deserves the adoration it has gained.

Poem for April 12, 2015

4-12 CollageApril 12, 2015
Sunday – late – Home

Had breakfast with Grant, Shelly and a few other colleagues before checking out of the hotel. Drove over to Concord and walked around a bit, then visited Walden Pond. Participated in about half of a guided walk before heading home. Want to go back to the town of Concord and Walden Pond again to explore both further. Maybe Jane and I can go for a weekend this summer.
Dinner with Mom and Dad. We took turns sharing about our adventures. They will leave at 9 tomorrow morning. The poem will have to wait until tomorrow. Time for bed. 11:30 p.m.

Selected words:
hill
willow
bluebird
experienced
wolf
lies
territory
dwelling
tentatively

4-12 PoemThere is a place
which lies
over the hill
and under the willow
where
the wolf makes his dwelling.
Experienced four legged creatures
tentatively approach this territory.
But the bluebird travels
without a care.

Poem for April 11, 2015

4-11 collageApril 11, 2015
Saturday evening – Boston – hotel room
Rainy – mid 50ºs?

Slept better last night, but am really tired now. Gave my lecture on labyrinths and their role in medieval art and architecture. This lecture attracted many attendees from area churches. Afterwards I spoke with many pastors, administrators and others who are considering building a labyrinth or who were wondering why there is a growing popularity of them. Interesting conversations.

Selected words:
blessing
glow
strange
known
travel
witch
took
Garden
disappears

4-11 poemThe Labyrinth

I took the path
leading out of
the Garden
and into a strange landscape.
All I have known
disappears.
I was warned that this
is the path of
the witch.
Yet as I walk,
I seem to encounter
God with every step.
There is a glow
as I approach
the center.
I journey back,
knowing
I have received
a blessing.

Friday evening – Boston hotel room
Cloudy upper 40ºs

I made it through the day and actually feel quite awake! Didn’t get much sleep at all last night. I participated in a panel discussion today. Tomorrow I give my lecture. Attended some very interesting lectures and met quite a few people as well as reconnected with others I had met in years past.

Selected words:
distance
looking
magnolias
Blackbird
friends
brought
vegetables
nests
hazel

4-10 PoemBuilding

Looking out into the distance
I can see the blackbirds
building nests in the magnolias.

I see friends approaching,
carrying the vegetables
they brought
for our lunch
by the
hazel.

Upper 30ºs, cold, mistakenly

A good drive overall. Got here a little early. Settled into my room and began working on this journal page. The opening session begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails followed by dinner and a presentation. Will see if I make anymore progress tonight.

Selected words:

cat’s
witch’s
potential
concentrated
strangely
steam
power
I did not get the chance to write the poem or decorate the squares at the end of this day, as the evening ended quite late and I needed to get adequate rest.
